Chronic pain after hernia surgery is a phenomenon that surprises many patients who expect pain to disappear completely after successful repair. The reality is that a proportion of patients experience persistent pain for months or even longer after surgery, and this pain has specific causes and effective treatments.

What Is Chronic Pain After Hernia Surgery?

Post-surgical pain is defined as chronic if it persists for more than three months after the operation. It differs from normal post-operative pain that gradually fades over weeks. This pain may be mild and bothersome or severe enough to limit activity, and may feel like burning, stabbing, or heaviness in the area.

1

Nerve Injury

Nerves surrounding the hernia area may be injured during surgery or compressed by mesh afterwards.

2

Mesh-Related Issues

Surgical mesh in rare cases may migrate or cause local inflammation leading to chronic pain.

3

Scar Pain

Scar tissue may adhere to surrounding nerves causing persistent pain even after the wound's superficial healing.

4

Central Sensitisation

In some cases the pain system itself becomes hypersensitive, maintaining pain even after its cause has resolved.

How Is Chronic Pain After Hernia Surgery Treated?

Treating this pain begins with precisely identifying its cause, since each cause has its appropriate treatment. Local injections with anaesthetic and corticosteroid may relieve nerve pain. Physical therapy helps with muscular and scar pain. Neuropathic medications may be used for central sensitisation pain. In resistant cases a surgical intervention to excise the affected nerve or adjust the mesh may be performed.

When to Return to Your Doctor?

If pain after hernia surgery persists for more than two months without clear improvement, or is severe enough to restrict your activity, return to your doctor to assess the cause and plan treatment. Don't endure pain silently.

"Chronic pain after hernia surgery is not an inevitable fate. In most cases we can identify its cause and put in place an effective treatment plan that restores quality of life. Most importantly, the patient shouldn't endure pain silently and should consult their doctor early."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pain after hernia surgery normal?

Does chronic pain need another surgery?

Not always. Many cases respond to non-surgical treatments. Surgery is reserved for resistant cases only.
